JFLTI: Spazzkid – Promise

While earnest romantic lyrics and dreamy pop production could be a recipe for unbearable cheesiness Spazzkid manages to turn this cut from his latest EP into an adorably bouncy and affectionate declaration of love. The J-Pop influenced Los Angeles based producer already impressed with last year’s wonky and gorgeous “Desire” album but on the “Promise” EP he condenses and adjusts his lush production style for a smaller batch of sublime and more up-tempo pop songs. As well as this energetic title song another highlight is “Truly” featuring great half-Japanese and half-English rapped verses from Sarah Bonito of Kero Kero Bonito and jersey club trappings. As a whole it’s a great introduction to Spazzkid’s sound and hopefully it’ll make J-Pop more accessible for inexperienced listeners.
