Just Fucking Listen To It: Iceage – The Lord’s Favorite

This surprise new single from Danish band Iceage is a massive departure in terms of style. On “The Lord’s Favorite” they do away with the gloriously sloppy playing, ear-piercing abrasion  and unabashed vulnerability that were the core tenants of their sound on their previous two albums. They instead opt for a rockabilly and country tinged sound accompanied by a new music video that has members of the band looking like fearless and confident rock stars. Despite the fact that it’s hard to tell how serious the band are with this new direction, they manage to pull it off effortlessly and almost sound as if they are having fun doing it. Whilst Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s vocals are still tortured howls, the lyrics now portray a certain amount of swagger instead of anguish. The rest of the playing is also tightened up considerably, the clean guitars ring out triumphantly and the rhythm section is propulsive and bouncy without being menacingly busy.  Although “The Lord’s Favorite” might concern fans of the band, I feel that this a winning experiment that has paid off for Iceage and I greatly anticipate the “more new music coming soon”.
